Organic Cotton Clothing: The Luxury of Cotton Without the Pesticides
Chances are most of the clothing in your closet is made from cotton. When you consider it is typically the primary fiber in our jeans, our t-shirts, our undergarments and more, cotton really is "the fabric of our lives." Therefore, organic cotton is a practical move towards becoming more eco-friendly.
Unfortunately, conventionally grown cotton has a few skeletons in its closet. According to aboutorganiccotton.org, the cotton industry:
- Consumes 25% of insecticides in the world
- Consumes 10% of pesticides in the world
- Requires up to 1/3 of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to produce one t-shirt
Organic cotton, however, is good for people and the planet because it is grown using sustainable farming practices without the use of chemicals and pesticides. Thus, making it healthier for the planet and healthier for the farmers and workers who grow, harvest, and manufacture it. All the more reason to start buying clothing made from organic cotton; especially when you consider that conventionally grown cotton is one of the most chemical-dependent crops in the world, organic cotton seems like the obvious, practical choice.
Plus, organic cotton has all the same fabulous qualities of conventionally grown cotton--just without all the chemicals. Organic cotton fabrics are resilient, come in a variety of weights (from cotton gauze to jersey), allow the skin to breathe, and are incredibly comfortable.
Organic cotton is one of the most popular eco-friendly fibers. Therefore, it is easy to find clothing made from organic cotton. Even places like Walmart and Target carry clothing made from this fabulous eco-fiber.
But fashionable organic cotton clothing, you say?
Look no further.
